The Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC) is Germany’s official representative for industry and trade in Malaysia. As the largest bilateral chamber in the country, MGCC connects their network with ministries, government agencies, business organizations and companies in Malaysia and Germany.
Based for almost 20 years at Menara AmBank, MGCC desired to be ahead of the other business chambers by moving into one of the best buildings in Kuala Lumpur which was Menara Hap Seng 2. With this significant relocation decision, MGCC needed the suitable design partner to create their new corporate office which is modern and complies to best practice standards.
SW1 was tasked to design an office that signifies corporate image of a respectful business chamber as well as infuse a sense of collaborative workspace. The chamber is divided into two sections: MGCC’s corporate office and a German Business Center (GBC) which is a shared service suites for new German start-ups in Malaysia. Hence, we have produced two separate space plans which complement each other – a subliminal linkage between MGCC and GBC – which also complies to DBKL’s local authority requirements.
The reception area is designed with the intent to create a warm yet transparent atmosphere by incorporating veneer finishes at the reception backdrop and as many glazing to allow natural light penetration. Adjacent to the reception is the boardroom and the collaboration lounge. With the installation of operable walls, the boardroom opens up to the collaborative lounge which transforms the area into a town hall setting or an event space.
As for the office area, we have adopted the open plan concept for MGCC that increases space efficiency. MGCC is able to add more headcounts and the proximity between departments encourages better interaction and greater communal sense for the staff. And to boost the overall mood, a subtle play of colours are inserted throughout the office.
We believe as much as making a good business impression with the office look and feel, the furniture that is used also brings a strong statement to the organization. We furnished MGCC’s client facing areas i.e. the boardroom, meeting rooms and management rooms with a renown German office furniture manufacturer called Wilkhahn. There is no compromise in terms of quality of finishes but most importantly the high ergonomic features of the boardroom and executive chairs and several cantilever chairs to support long meetings and discussions. This is further combined with modular meeting tables that are not only functional but also elegant.
